Necessary Remnants was conceived of as a site-specific installation for STORAGE, a yearlong exhibition and performance venue located in a re-purposed storefront in residential Vancouver. This site's history as a community food store and meeting place juxtaposed with its current incarnation as an experimental art centre led me to consider what manifest effect abstract art might have outside gallery walls.Necessary Remnants used the gallery as a cultural staging area where I installed a collection of painted wooden props depicting abstract contemporary social anxieties such as terrorism, imprisonment, and ecological decline. These sculptural props were casually arranged in the gallery without the coherent narrative logic that their rigid formal lexicon and intense subject matter might otherwise imply, creating an ambiguous zone that projected the installation's true realization outside of the temporal gallery context while simultaneously emphasizing their sculptural objecthood and technical realization within the gallery context. At the close of the exhibition, Necessary Remnants's physical elements were destroyed, emphasizing their role as props - physical depictions of abstract social memes.
